The Tale of Dollar and Rice
When peso gain against dollar, Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas reported that its because of the inflow of remittances from OFW's, however, Gloria Arroyo said it's because of our improving economy.
But for the skyrocketing price of fuel, she said its a "global issue".
Everybody knows they are both global issues. But why grab credits on the still disputed issue of "improving economy".
Now that the price of rice is increasing, she's saying again that it's a global issue. When it's not. The truth is, they are doing "band aid" solution on our rice requirement, instead of ensuring local supply and protecting the interest of local farmers. Why? There are more money on importations.
We Filipinos doesn't need to know if there are improvement in the economy. We need to see it in our dining tables, not in figures in televisions and in newspapers. After all, it will be more beneficial if those advertising funds be used for livelihood instead.
It may be true that GDP or GNP is increasing in numbers. But they increase together with hunger and unemployment rate. Those who have something to eat, have it today less than what they have yesterday. They work longer now than they do yesterday. Very few people feels how lives gets better. They are those who are brokering to push through with the NBN-ZTE Deal.
They maybe right when they say that the economy and lives are getting better. Everybody knows, it is their economy and their lives.
